Babies in Common
6 Maple Street, Northborough, MA as well as home visits
I have been fascinated by community-building and women’s health since high school. When I was 21, I moved to a village in West Africa to serve for two years as a health volunteer with the Peace Corps. I lived in a village and worked daily with a midwife and nurse, primarily doing child weight monitoring programs, health education, vaccination programs, specific campaigns for emerging diseases and working with malnourished children. I came home, completed my Masters degree in international public health and nutrition at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and worked for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health managing some of their perinatal community health programs when my husband and I started a family. Through that experience I found a calling in birth and breastfeeding work as well as childbirth education. I taught at two hospitals (one for 7 years, one for 3) and eventually started my private practice and opened a maternity and parenting center called Mothers & Company. After five years I had to close that but continued working on my own as a childbirth educator and eventually became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. I now teach childbirth and prenatal classes in Northborough and also do lactation consultations in homes and in my office in Northborough.
My favorite things about my work are when I see the eyes of parents-to-be light up in one of my classes when they learn about all the choices they have. And, during one of my breastfeeding support groups or a consultation, when I see a new parent be excited to learn a new skill that will make their life easier or help them understand their baby better. In my spare time, I love hanging out with my teenage kids, connecting with friends, writing, driving (while I play loud music!) and TV shows about decorating, real estate and sometimes those crazy housewives.
